Pilates is a complete and thorough exercise program for core strengthening, flexibility, and body awareness through specific exercises and sometimes using special equipment. It is an effective method for almost any individual with or without any musculoskeletal injury or disorder. Pilates targets the whole body, correcting muscle asymmetries and weaknesses, which are often the cause of pain or musculoskeletal dysfunction. Exercises can be modified based on the individuals’ needs and/or goals. The goal is to alleviate or avoid further pain, increase range of motion, enhance joint stability, maintain healthy movement patterns, and correct abnormal postural habits to balance and strengthen muscles, thus improving overall function.

Additionally, Pilates is wonderful to do during and after pregnancy and for pelvic floor weakness/incontinence, if performed with a highly trained pre-natal/post-partum instructor or physical therapist.  As well, it can be beneficial for pelvic pain, but should be performed towards the END of the physical therapy treatment and should ONLY be performed with a physical therapist that specializes in pelvic pain.  “Towards the end” means, when your pelvic pain symptoms are 60-80% improved.  A skilled pelvic pain physical therapist can help guide you through a program.
